Growth of Roots

چکیده
The growth, development and function of plant roots in relation to plant productivity has been very difficult to evaluate, especially in natural field situations. Weaver (1926) and co-workers stated over 50 years ago that "An exact knowledge of the root development of crop plants, of their position, extent and activity as absorbers of water and solutes at various stages of growth is of paramount importance to a scientific understanding of plant production." The accumulation ofthis knowledge becomes more important as more crops are grown under adverse conditions and the need for production efficiency increases. This portion of the treatise on cotton physiology will concentrate specific<:wy v .. providing a general overview of root growth and development in cotton, methods of measurement, some factors affecting cotton root growth, and root/shoot relationships that affect productivity.

The interaction between sodium and calcium, magnesium and calcium and the combined effect of sodium, magnesium and calcium was observed on the growth and ion uptake of Hippophae rhamnoides L. The results demonstrated that an addition of sodium with calcium, (set a, Na 2.5 + Ca 5 mM) showed prominent increase in fresh weight of roots and shoots. The dry weight (average) of roots decreased an...
متن کاملThe effect of silver nanoparticles on the growth and antioxidants of transgenic hairy roots in hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis, H. angustifolius)
Background: Nowadays, biotechnological methods such as transgenic hairy root culture and application of elicitors have become an attractive source for secondary metabolites production. Hyssop species (Hyssopus spp.) having active ingredients including antioxidants such as phenolics, in this plant have shown anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic and antiglycemic effects. Objective: The present study...
متن کاملResponses of growth and antioxidative enzymes to various concentrations of nickel in Zea mays leaves and roots. Fatemeh Ghasemi*, Reza Heidari, Rashid Jameii and Latifeh Purakbar
To assess nickel-induced toxicity in plants, Zea mays seeds were germinated and cultured on nutrient solution with nickel concentrations of 50-200 μM for a period of two weeks. Observed biological makers included biomass, soluble and total protein contents, and the activities of guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) in the l...
متن کاملSodium Chloride Effects on Seed Germination, Growth and Ion Concentration in Chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla)
Matricaria chamomilla is a medicinal plant that is widely cultivated in salt affected soils. This investigation was undertaken to study the effect of NaCl concentration on germination, and the physiological, biochemical and growth characteristics of chamomile. Seed germination and growth were studied at five NaCl concentration levels (0, 40, 80, 120 and 190 mM NaCl concentration). Increasing th...

To characterize some important eco-physiological aspects of Alhagi pseudalhagi growth, the present investigation was conducted at the farm of Khorasan Agricultural Research Center during 2004-2005. Various botanical characteristics including root structure and existence of starch in root were studied. Number of seeds per pod, pod length and test weight were recorded. A number of field and pot ...
